Create your own island inspired by the Star Wars™ galaxy with unique templates that contain Star Wars assets, which include characters, artwork, logos, costumes, prefabs, galleries, tools, cosmetics, vehicles, weapons, maps, sound effects, and other items (“Star Wars Assets”). Jump into Fortnite Creative and Unreal Editor for Fortnite to build Creative Islands using Star Wars Assets (“Star Wars Islands”)! Working with Star Wars Assets comes with certain responsibilities and requirements. Below is a set of rules that You must follow when creating and publishing Star Wars Islands.
Your use of Star Wars Assets in Fortnite Creative and Unreal Editor for Fortnite to create Star Wars Islands, including any promotion thereof, is governed by the STAR WARS™ Brand Rules (“STAR WARS Brand Rules”) (as outlined below), Fortnite End User License Agreement, IP Partner Licensing Agreement, Community Guidelines, Monetization Agreement, and Fortnite Island Developer Rules (together, the “Developer Agreements”). Please read these terms carefully before using any Star Wars Assets. If you intend to make any items or offers available as In-Island Transactions (“In-Island Transactions”) in your Star Wars Island, please read carefully the In-Island Transactions Rules in Section 4.4 of the Fortnite Developer Rules and the In-Island Transactions Restrictions. By using the Star Wars Assets, you agree to be bound by the Developer Agreements.
STAR WARS Brand Rules
When building, publishing, and promoting Star Wars Islands using Star Wars Assets, you must adhere to all relevant agreements and the following Star Wars Brand Rules:
Limits to Star Wars Assets. You can only use the Star Wars Assets that are provided to you in Unreal Editor for Fortnite (“UEFN”) in the manner they are provided within Fortnite and the only approved Star Wars Assets are the ones provided to you for access via UEFN. Do not copy, record, or make any attempt to extract or replicate the Star Wars Assets outside UEFN or your Star Wars Island. Do not import any Disney characters or assets (for example, Star Wars weapons, shields, vehicles, etc.) into UEFN and use them in your islands or In-Island Transactions.
Only create using genuine Star Wars Assets. You are not permitted to create your own version of a Star Wars Asset or new assets based on Star Wars or Star Wars Assets, or to recreate any non-genuine Star Wars Assets, including for In-Island Transactions. However, you are allowed to combine provided environmental assets (e.g., architecture, props, terrain) to construct unique structures and layouts ('kitbashing'). This exception does not apply to items you create for In-Island Transactions or combining parts to create new vehicles, characters, or weapons.
Only use permitted modifications. Do not change or otherwise modify any existing Star Wars Asset, Star Wars element or other Star Wars content, for example, by stretching, cropping or recoloring. Modifications of Star Wars Assets for In-Island Transactions are permitted only as enabled by the tools we’ve provided. Only use the UEFN customization or monetization tools that we’ve provided for Star Wars Assets. For example, for Star Wars sound effects, no edits can be made, except as our tools allow. Sound effects cannot be used on their own to create or offer In-Island Transactions. Uniform scaling, rotation, and overlapping of environmental assets is permitted to accommodate gameplay needs and level design. 'Hero Assets' (specifically characters, vehicles, and weapons) are excluded from this permission and must be used exactly as provided without distortion.
Star Wars Islands must use Star Wars Assets when publishing your island. In order to be considered a Star Wars island, your island must contain at least one (1) Star Wars Asset.
Don’t export, sell or redistribute any Star Wars Assets. You cannot download, remove, sell, license, distribute or exploit any Star Wars Assets, including on a stand-alone basis or as part of an online asset database or marketplace, or any other database, including in such a way that would allow a third party to use, download, extract, or access any Star Wars Assets as a stand-alone file, or allow you or others to transfer or exploit the Star Wars Assets outside of your own Star Wars Islands, whether individually or as ‘kitbashed’ into an asset compilation, including as part of In-Island Transactions in other non-Star Wars islands that you did not create. Offers or sales for In-Island Transactions are permitted only within your Star Wars Island as enabled by the tools we’ve provided.
Don’t advertise, preach, or campaign.
Do not advertise or promote any products, services or property in or in connection with your island. Do not use Star Wars or other Disney characters as a product "spokesperson" or use Star Wars Assets in a manner that could imply a relationship to products, services, or property, including You and your islands.
Do not preach about sensitive topics, like political parties or religion. Do not show Star Wars Assets with religious imagery or icons or in any uniform or alongside any flag or symbol that replicates a real world social, political or military group or institution, except to the extent Epic includes those assets within Fortnite or UEFN more generally. Do not use Star Wars Assets to support or make a statement regarding any social, political or religious organization, campaign or cause (e.g., whether regarding a candidate, a law or making a statement on an issue such as war, gun use, etc.).
Restrictions on using your own Assets. You may use assets that you own all rights to in your island in compliance with the Developer ›Agreements, these Star Wars Brand Rules and all other relevant agreements, except you may not use (i) intellectual property (IP) derived from film or TV or (ii) characters from major multimedia video game franchises in your Star Wars Islands, even if you have the rights to that IP or characters. In-Island Transactions you create or offer in other non-Star Wars islands cannot be promoted or used in Star Wars Islands. You may create and offer In-Island Transactions across your Star Wars Islands, including multiple Star Wars Islands you develop.
Respect Disney and others. Don’t use Star Wars Assets in a manner that could harm or offend others. Do not use Star Wars Assets or characters in an obscene, violent, or discriminatory manner. For more details on Epic’s requirements for safe and appropriate use of all Fortnite assets, including Star Wars Assets, refer to Section 1 of the Fortnite Developer Rules and Section 1 of the Fan Content Policy.
Promote your island honestly and accurately. Don’t mislead others into visiting your island. When creating media to promote your island (e.g., text descriptions, thumbnails, lobby backgrounds, and videos), make sure it accurately reflects the Star Wars Island or game mechanics you created and don’t copy or impersonate another game or developer. Reference the requirements outlined in Promoting Your Fortnite Island and note that content and messaging in your promotion of your Star Wars Island must comply with the Developer Agreements and be age appropriate for the target audience. For more details, refer to Section 3 of the Fortnite Developer Rules).
Restrictions on use of trademarks/logos. Do not use Star Wars or Disney logos or similarly styled logos, any titles of any Star Wars or Disney films, TV, video games, books, comics, and music or any Disney or any of its affiliates’ entity names (e.g., Lucasfilm, Marvel, Pixar, etc.) in a Star Wars Island, its title, thumbnail, description, other promotional imagery or videos, or in any In-Island Transactions. You may use “Star Wars” and the names of locations and characters from the Star Wars universe in the title of your Star Wars Island, so long as your use does not imply that Disney created or endorsed your island. For clarity, restricted trademarks include, but are not limited to the following:
Star Wars Battlefront
Star Wars Zero Company
Star Wars Outlaws
Star Wars: Hunters
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Star Wars Eclipse
Star Wars: Squadrons
Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic
Star Wars: Galactic Racer
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic
Disney owns all rights in its characters, visual assets, settings, stories, content, and other Disney IP. Disney owns and retains all rights, title and interest in all Star Wars Assets and Disney IP, including all copyrights, patents, trademarks, and other IP rights. Disney is providing you a limited, revocable, non-transferable, and non-exclusive license to the Star Wars Assets solely for use in your Star Wars Island and promotion thereof in compliance with the Developer Agreements and all relevant Epic agreements. Your use of any Star Wars Assets does not grant you any ownership rights in any Star Wars Assets or Disney IP. If you create a Disney Derivative Work (defined below), the foregoing licensed rights shall be conditioned upon your assignment to Disney of all right, title and interest in and to the applicable Disney Derivative Work. If such rights are not assigned to Disney, your license to create such a Disney Derivative Work hereunder shall be null and void. “Disney Derivative Work” means any derivative work, including any design or gameplay element, that is derived or adapted from Star Wars Assets or Disney IP, including as included in any Disney Islands. The term “Disney Derivative Works” does not include any (1) of your intellectual property or Epic’s; or (2) generic or purely functional gameplay element, in each case, that is not a derivative work of any Disney IP, and (i) predates Epic or your use of the Star Wars Assets, or (ii) is separable from the Disney IP and is generally re-usable in any non-Disney IP games.
The Star Wars Brand Rules are enforced by Epic and Disney. You must treat Disney’s IP with the same respect, and follow the same rules, as you do with Epic’s IP under Epic’s Fan Content Policy and the Fortnite Developer Rules, including that you may not claim endorsement by or association with Disney, you may not use Disney IP in a manner that is derogatory to Disney, and you may not claim ownership over Disney IP or otherwise challenge Disney’s rights in Disney IP. Any promotion in connection with your use of Star Wars Assets or your Star Wars Islands must comply with Section 3 of the Fortnite Developer Rules. Your use of Star Wars Assets must be accompanied by the following disclaimer in the description of your Star Wars Island:
Portions of the materials used are trademarks and/or copyrighted works of The Walt Disney Company. All rights reserved by Disney. This material is not official and is not endorsed by Disney.
Disney can report your island to Epic for violating these rules. If your island or any In-Island Transactions are found to be violating the Star Wars Brand Rules or other Developer Agreements, your content will be removed, and you will not be eligible for engagement payout awards for that island or any In-Island Transactions. Continued violation of these rules may lead to increasing restrictions, including losing access to the Star Wars Assets, suspension, or termination of your account.
STAR WARS Music
Epic may make available Star Wars inspired music (“Star Wars Music”) as a Star Wars Asset for your use in Star Wars Islands. When building, publishing, and promoting Star Wars Islands using Star Wars Music, in addition to the Star Wars and Disney Brand Rules, you must adhere to the following rules:
Permitted uses. You may use Star Wars Music only for the following purposes:
Background music;
Points-of-interest;
Stingers;
Loops; and
Associated with NPCs.
Limits to modification. You may adjust the Star Wars Music solely as follows:
Length;
Volume; and
Looping.
Restrictions on usage. You may not use the Star Wars Music except as provided in these Star Wars Music Rules. For example, without limitation, you may not use Star Wars Music to create:
Promotional materials;
Re-recordings;
Copies;
Remixes;
Remasters;
Arrangements;
Pitch/speed adjustments;
Display of lyrics;
Mixes with other songs or sound effects; or
any In-Island Transactions.
Term: Due to licensing restrictions, Star Wars Music may be available for a limited period. Once the Star Wars Music is removed as a Star Wars Asset (“Star Wars Music Expiration”), you may not attempt to export, save, re-upload, record, copy, or continue using the Star Wars Music in any Star Wars Island updates. Star Wars Islands already published prior to the Star Wars Music Expiration may retain the Star Wars Music, but after the Star Wars Music Expiration, you will not be able to publish any subsequent updates or republications of your Star Wars Island if your Star Wars Island contains Star Wars Music.
Never Use STAR WARS Assets with Third-Party IP
You may not use any third-party IP (e.g., IP derived from films, TV, video games, books, comics, and music) in or in promotion of your Star Wars Island, including in any In-Island Transactions or paid marketing or promotion within your Star Wars Island, even if the owner of the IP has given their approval. Your assets, island, offers, and any distribution, promotion or exploitation thereof also cannot infringe or violate third-party rights, including IP rights (such as copyright or trademark rights) and rights of privacy or publicity. You must own the necessary rights to share and publish any content contained in your Star Wars Island or used in promotion thereof, and such rights must enable you to grant Epic a license consistent with the Fortnite EULA and the UEFN Supplemental Terms. You can also use other assets provided to you directly by Epic, excluding assets from another IP Partner Program partner (such as with LEGO® Islands, TMNT Islands, or TWDU Islands), subject to the separate terms of use of such assets.
Monetizing STAR WARS Islands
Disney is providing a limited license to their content for you to use their approved Star Wars Assets. This will allow you to bring an officially licensed Star Wars Island into the Fortnite ecosystem, and create new types of islands for the Fortnite community. In return, you must comply with the terms of the IP Partner Licensing Agreement including the Star Wars Brand Rules, and the Fortnite Developer Rules, Community Guidelines, and all other relevant agreements. The only approved Star Wars assets and features are the ones accessed through the designated templates. The only approved In-Island Transactions are (i) durable items, (ii) consumable items, (iii) paid areas; (iv) paid random items, and (v) bundles of these approved In-Island Transactions, provided such bundles are offered solely within the Star Wars Island(s) that you have developed. In-Island Transactions may not feature gambling-like mechanics or mislead players into spending unintentionally and must be created, offered and sold in accordance with the In-Island Transactions Rules in Section 4.4 of the Fortnite Developer Rules and the In-Island Transactions Restrictions.
In consideration for Disney’s license to you to use the Star Wars Assets to create your Star Wars Island(s), you agree to share with Disney 20% of your total island engagement payout and 30% of your total payout for In-Island Transactions. Epic will automatically deduct this amount from your engagement payout and/or In-Island Transaction payout and distribute it to Disney, and you will receive the remainder. You agree to this process when you sign the IP Partner Licensing Agreement in the Creator Portal.
Promoting your STAR WARS Island
When creating media for your island, reference the guidelines outlined in Promoting Your Fortnite Island. Make sure images and videos accurately reflect the island or game mechanics you created and don’t copy another game or developer. Your promotion of your Star Wars Island must comply with the Star Wars Brand Rules, Fortnite Developer Rules, Community Guidelines, and other relevant agreements (e.g., Section 3 of the Fortnite Developer Rules). The content and messaging in your promotion must be consistent with the content rules and guidelines in such rules and agreements and age appropriate for the target audience of your island.
Thumbnails, Lobby Background Images, and Videos
In addition to the existing rules, you may have noticed that some of the Star Wars Brand Rules also relate to your promotional assets. Here are some specific guidelines on the Star Wars Brand Rules for your promotional materials.
You Can:
Use Star Wars Assets provided to you in UEFN in your thumbnails and lobby backgrounds, so long as your use complies with these Star Wars Brand Rules and the Developer Agreements.
Use “Star Wars” and the names of locations and characters from the Star Wars universe in the title of your Star Wars Island.
You Cannot:
Use any images, key art, music, or marketing material from any Star Wars or Disney films, TV, video games, books, and comics in the thumbnail, lobby background, description, videos, promotional material for your Star Wars Island, or any In-Island Transactions.
Use third-party IP in the thumbnail, lobby background, description, videos, promotional material for your Star Wars Island, or any In-Island Transactions.
Use any Star Wars or Disney logo or similarly styled logo, or Disney or any of its affiliates’ entity name, in the thumbnail, lobby background, description, videos, promotional material for your Star Wars Island, or any In-Island Transactions.
Unless included in the Star Wars Assets, use any names, images or likenesses of any Star Wars or Disney actor’s, employees, or representatives, or any other images designed to evoke them, in the thumbnail, lobby background, description, videos, promotional material for your Star Wars Island, or any In-Island Transactions.
Claim or imply that your Star Wars Island or any In-Island Transactions are affiliated with or endorsed by Disney or the Star Wars brand.
Your Island in Discover
In the Creator Portal, Star Wars Islands are automatically tagged with "Developer-Made Star Wars Island" during the publishing process with a special tag that will appear in the product details page. It must be clear that your Star Wars Island was created by you, and is not an island created by Disney. It must be clear that any In-Island Transactions are created and offered only by you, and not created or otherwise endorsed by Disney.
Developer-Made Star Wars Islands will show up in Discover and are searchable, like any other Fortnite island.
