Creating a Sidekick

The NPC Character

To create a Sidekick, you need to attach an NPC Character Definitions to an NPC Spawner device. You can also drag an existing NPC Character Definition directly into the scene from the content draw, which automatically places an NPC Spawner device into the scene with the NPC Character Definition associated with it.

You can either create NPC Character Definitions through the Content Drawer or directly through the NPC Spawner device settings.

Your modified NPC Character Definitions can be seen once imported into the NPC Spawner device. If you create an NPC Character Definition within the NPC Spawner device, your modifications are immediately reflected in the NPC Spawner device.

To create a Character Definition through the Content Drawer, follow these steps:

Navigate to your project content folder and right click within the Content Drawer.
In the pop-up window, navigate to Artificial Intelligence > NPC Character Definition.
Name your Character Definition, then double-click the thumbnail to edit your NPC's properties.

To create a Character Definition through the NPC Spawner device, follow these steps:

Place an NPC Spawner device and open its Details panel.
In the User Options, navigate to NPC Character Definition and click its dropdown menu.
In its Create New Asset window, select NPC Character Definition.
Name your Character Definition then double-click its square thumbnail to open the Character Definition window.

Defining a Sidekick

To define a Sidekick, there are three key components:

NPC Character type
NPC Character Behavior
NPC Character Modifiers.

You can design custom behavior for Sidekicks by setting the NPC Character type to Custom, and the NPC Character Behavior to Verse Behavior, providing your own Verse code to dictate how the Sidekick behaves.

Visually, a Sidekick is configured with the Cosmetic Modifier. To change the Character cosmetic to a Sidekick, change Character Look to Fortnite Sidekick.

A Fortnite Sidekick has two main components:

Sidekick Cosmetic - This decides the specific Sidekick skin, like Slurp Puppy
Companion Variant Channels - These channels allow you to further customize the Sidekick skins. Adding accent and detail colors, adding visual quirks like floppy ears, or adding specific emotes.

You can enable the Players Sidekick cosmetic from their locker by checking Cosmetic Sidekicks Enabled in your island settings instance. You can also configure their visibility and whether Sidekick reactions are permitted in your experience.

Modifying Size and Scale

You can control the size of your Sidekick with the new Scale Modifier.

The Scale Factor parameter is a uniform scale modification to your character in the range of 0.1 to 10 times the original scale of the character.

Locomotion animations are scaled relative to the size of your character. So the larger the Scale Factor, the slower the movement animation will be.

Damage Immunity System

You can make your Sidekicks immune to damage from nearly all sources by checking the box of the Is Vulnerable option in the Health Modifier within your NPC Character Definition.
