MetaHumans are designed and developed to support a wide range of hardware and platforms. They scale in quality from high-end cinematic experiences down to mobile devices. The goal is to have a single, scalable MetaHuman that you can use across hardware and platforms without needing complex setups and content management systems.
This page outlines the technical specifications for MetaHumans that Epic Games uses when developing MetaHuman Presets and their Components. Use the information outlined on this page to better understand MetaHuman LODs across different platforms.
Platform Support
The table below details the highest quality levels that MetaHumans support across different platforms. Use these specifications to optimize your use of MetaHumans depending on which platforms you are targeting. For example, you don’t need to use the highest resolution textures or use strand-based grooms for your MetaHumans if your target platform doesn’t support these features.
| Platform | Ray Tracing Support | Hair | Best LOD | Max Texture Size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
PC (Epic and Cinematic Quality) | Yes | Strands and Cards | 0 | 8192 |
PC (Medium and Lower Quality) | No | Strands and Cards | 0 | 8192 |
Mac | No | Cards | 0 | 8192 |
iOS/Android | No | Cards | 3 | 2048 |
With the new DNA Asset, the state of RigLogic is serialized into the UE Archive with the minimal amount of necessary DNA data. When the use starts the game executable, the game deserializes the RigLogic state from the cooked UE Archive and initialized RigLogic without extra copies of data or other expensive operations.
LOD Specifications
MetaHuman Components are created using the following specifications as a guide for individual LODs. This doesn’t mean that each MetaHuman will use exactly these numbers, or that all LODs will be used.
Most MetaHumans should stay within this general quality range, but that can vary depending on character attributes, clothing, and whether or not the character will use all LODs.
