Thumbnail images can be influential to the player's perception of an island; they are often your first impression as a developer, and also important to the success of an island. Think of thumbnails as your way to market your island to the Fortnite community.
On this page, we highlight policies that are especially relevant to thumbnails, but be sure to read and adhere to all Fortnite Developer Rules.
Thumbnail Images
A thumbnail is a still image (not a video) of your island that invites players to learn more. It helps establish your style and brand. This image appears in Discover, so keep it unique and engaging.
You can upload thumbnails through your Creator Portal account.
Thumbnails should be 1920x1080 minimum (16:9 aspect ratio) for a rectangular thumbnail and the image size should be no larger than 5 MB.
Appropriate for a General Audience
Content that is suitable for a general audience cannot contain realistic violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, gore, references to gambling, or use of strong language. The following aren’t allowed in thumbnails:
Mildly sexualized depictions of a character’s body parts, such as breasts or buttocks
Images that elicit a strong sense of threat, dread or terror (for example, grotesque creatures)
Targeted gunfire, such as bullet impacts on a character or bullet trails heading toward a character’s head
Crosshairs shown over a face / head
Guns pointed at the viewer
Guns pointed at the head of a character
Blood of any kind, realistic or unrealistic
To learn more, see the ESRB Ratings Principles and Guidelines.
Don't Include References to Real-world or In-game Currency
Don’t mention or include images of V-Bucks or any real-world currency or equivalent on your thumbnails.
Do Not Misrepresent Your Island’s Experience
Ensure your thumbnail accurately represents your island and doesn’t mislead players about what sort of experience they’ll have. For example, any guns or devices featured on your thumbnail must be available and interactable in your island.
Do Not Reference XP Gains.
Don’t reference levelling up or XP amounts on your thumbnails, and don’t use terms such as AFK, XP, Coin farm, or Coin slide, or images of Fortnite or similar coins.
Do Not Reference Platform-Specific Game Controls
Discover only includes platform-agnostic islands that can be played on any platform that supports Fortnite. Don’t include depictions of platform-specific controls on your thumbnail.
Be Original
Make your thumbnails unique. Don’t duplicate, copy, or reproduce another developer’s thumbnail or impersonate another developer or brand.
Don’t Spam
Don’t publish multiple copies of your island using the same or highly similar thumbnails to try to manipulate search ranking, engagement or visibility.
Respect IP Ownership
Do not violate anyone’s intellectual property rights, including Epic’s. You can use Epic-owned assets made available to you in UEFN, but don’t use recreated assets or Epic Games’ logos or product names. For example, don’t use Epic’s key art, even if it isn’t currently in use, or recreate Battle Royale season assets in your thumbnail if they are not available in UEFN.
No Photos of Real-Life People
Don’t include photographs of real-life people in your thumbnail.
