Devices used:
2 x Vehicle Spawner (such as Pickup Truck Spawner Devices or Vehicle Spawner Device)
2 x Trigger
2 x Barrier
1 x Timed Objective
Optional: 2+ x Boost Pad
Optional: 1+ x EMP Volume Hazard
This module uses Pickup Trucks. For a vehicle built for high-speed racing, with jumps, thrusters, drifting, and wall driving, use the Vehicle Spawner device instead. See (Optional) Use High-Speed Racing Vehicles. The barrier, trigger, and timer steps work the same way with either vehicle.
Place the Pickup Truck Spawner or Vehicle Spawner device in the location you want for the race starting position and configure the User Options for the spawner. Some of the options will be found in the Advanced section.
| Option | Value | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
Activating Team | Team Index: 1 | Each vehicle will need to match a team that corresponds with the teams you set up on the Player Spawn Pads. |
Visible During Game | False | This refers to the base the vehicle spawns on, not the vehicle. To hide the base during gameplay, set to False. |
Boost Enabled | True | Enables boost for the vehicle. |
Boost Regen Multiplier | 20 | As the developer of the island, it's up to you to determine how much boost your vehicle has, but for this tutorial, set it to Fast. |
Tire Selection | Off-Road Tires | Gives vehicles more traction. |
Force a Player Back into Their Vehicle
You'll need Trigger devices. You'll set these triggers to reassign the player as the driver of their vehicle 5 seconds after they exit the vehicle. You can change the amount of time the player can exit the vehicle, or even force them to never leave the vehicle.
Place the triggers in an out-of-the-way location for convenience, and configure the User Options as follows:
| Option | Value | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
Trigger Delay | 3.0 | After 3 seconds, the player will be returned to their vehicle. |
Visible in Game | False | The trigger will not be visible in-game. |
Cover Vehicles with Barriers
Placing Barrier devices over the vehicles prevents players from starting the race before the barriers are deactivated.
Place the first Barrier device so that it completely encloses the vehicle, and configure the User Options as follows:
| Option | Value | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
Enabled During Phase | Always | This prevents the vehicle from driving out before the race starts. |
Zone Shape | Hollow Box | If the box were not hollow, it would force the vehicle out of the box instead of acting as a cage to hold the vehicle in place until the start of the race. |
Add a Timed Objective Device
Use this device to count down to the start and display a HUD message announcing the start of the race.
Drag the Timed Objective device onto the viewport to an out-of-the-way location and configure the User Options for the device:
| Option | Value | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
Start When Round Starts | True | The timer starts as soon as the round begins. The timer will count down the time until the barriers fall and the players can fight. |
Time | "10" | You can set this to any number, and after that number is reached, the timer will send a signal to disable the barriers. |
Timer Label Text | "Race Starting in:" | This is the text that displays on the HUD while the timer is counting down. Use Any text you want, up to 80 characters. |
Visible During Game | False | Makes the device invisible during the game. |
(Optional) Use High-Speed Racing Vehicles
The Vehicle Spawner device spawns a vehicle built for high-speed racing. It can jump, use thrusters, drift, and drive on walls and ceilings. It works well on tracks built with the Track Devices, but you can use it on any track.
Add High-Speed Racing Vehicles
In the Content Browser, navigate to Fortnite > Devices and drag a Vehicle Spawner device into each starting position, inside the Barrier cages.
Configure the User Options for the first spawner:
| Option | Value | Description |
|---|---|---|
Activating Team | Team Index: 1 | Match the team on the corresponding Player Spawner. Set the second spawner to Team Index: 2. |
Visible During Game | Off | Hides the spawner base during gameplay. |
Enable Respawn | On | Respawns the vehicle if it is destroyed. |
Respawn Time | Instant (0.0) | Gets players back into the race right away. |
All other options stay at their default values for now. In Module 4, bind these spawners the same way as the Pickup Truck Spawners.
Learn the Controls
Playtest the vehicles before you tune them.
| Action | Input | What it does |
|---|---|---|
Jump | Left mouse button | Launches the vehicle into the air. |
Thruster | Hold left mouse button | Extends a jump. |
Turbo | Mouse wheel button | Uses a turbo charge for a burst of speed. |
Drift | Shift | Slides the rear wheels through a turn. Drifting builds turbo. |
Air Dodge | Right mouse button while turning, in the air | Moves the vehicle sideways in the air, and attaches it to walls and ceilings. |
Reverse Camera | Hold Q | Shows the rear view until released. |
Tune the Vehicles
You can keep the vehicles close to the ground for a classic race, or push them toward high-mobility, platforming-style gameplay. Use these settings as starting points, then playtest and adjust.
Grounded racing — for tracks without wall rides or pipes:
| Option | Value | Description |
|---|---|---|
Surface Counter Gravity Degree Threshold | Lower value | Keeps the vehicle off walls and ceilings. |
Surface Latch Degree Threshold | Lower value | Limits which surfaces the vehicle latches on to from the air. |
Air Dodge Count | 0 | Turns off air dodges. |
Thrust Meter Starting Amount | 0% | No thruster at the start. Pair with Thrust Meter Replenishes on Landing set to Off. |
High-mobility racing — for tracks with pipes, wall rides, and big jumps:
| Option | Value | Description |
|---|---|---|
Air Dodge Count | 2 or more | More ways to reach walls and ceilings. |
Thrust Meter Replenishes Over Time | On | Players can use the thruster more often. |
Jump Force | Above 1.0X | Higher jumps for gaps and ramps. |
Gravity Aerial Scalar | Below 1.0X | Longer hang time in the air. |
For every option, see the Vehicle Spawner device page.
(Optional) Add Boost Pads and EMP Hazards
Boost Pad and EMP Volume Hazard devices affect only vehicles from the Vehicle Spawner device. They have no effect on Pickup Trucks.
Boost Pads
A Boost Pad gives a vehicle a fixed speed boost when it drives over the pad. Every pad behaves the same way for every player.
In the Content Browser, navigate to Fortnite > Devices and drag a Boost Pad device onto the track.
Place boost pads where speed rewards good driving:
On a straight after a sharp turn.
On a secondary track or shortcut that is harder to drive.
Before a jump, to carry players across a gap.
If you place several pads in a row, decide whether their boosts stack:
To stack boosts, leave Speed Group ID at -1 on each pad.
To give one boost for the whole row, set every pad in the row to the same Speed Group ID, such as 1.
EMP Hazards
An EMP Volume Hazard slows down a vehicle that enters it. The speed loss and its length are fixed.
Drag an EMP Volume Hazard device onto the track.
Set Shape to Cube or Sphere, then scale the volume to cover the area you want.
Place hazards where they create choices:
Partly across the track, so players must steer around them.
On a shortcut, so the faster route carries a risk.
Near boost pads, so players have to pick a line.
Use the On EMPHazard Triggered event to react when a vehicle is hit, for example by playing a sound with an Audio Player device.
Playtest your island at any time by clicking the "Launch Session" button.
