This page lists the recommended capture device requirements for MetaHuman Animator. The recommendations may vary, depending on whether you intend to generate animation in real time or not.
Realtime Animation Capture Device Requirements
iPhone
iPhone 12 or newer, 16 or 16 Pro recommended.
Ensure that the Live Link Face iOS application is installed.
Android
Realtime animation support is currently limited to devices with certain Qualcomm chipsets.
We cannot guarantee compatibility as the manufacturer may choose to disable certain required chipset features as they deem necessary.
The following device models have been verified as compatible in our own testing:
OnePlus 12 5G
ROG Phone 7 Ultimate
Samsung S23 Ultra
Samsung S24 USA/Canada/China
Samsung S24 Ultra
Sony Xperia 1 VI
The application should be compatible with devices containing the following Qualcomm chipsets.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1
Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
Snapdragon 8 Gen 3
Snapdragon 8 Elite
The Snapdragon 8s series of chipsets are not supported.
Ensure that the Live Link Face Android (Beta) application is installed.
Mono Video Camera (Webcam)
Any USB connected video capture device supported by Windows' Universal Video Class (UVC) driver can be used.
Webcams with automatic settings such as auto focus or exposure control may impact the capture performance when trying to compensate in sub-optimal lighting conditions for example. These settings should be disabled if possible.
Windows 11 is required in order to use a software virtual camera as a webcam.
Audio (Microphone)
Any USB connected audio capture device supported by Windows' Universal Video Class (UVC) driver can be used.
Offline Animation Capture Device Requirements
iPhone
iPhone 12 or newer, 12 is recommended.
Several Apple iPad models also have a depth sensor, however, they aren’t tested and we can’t recommend using them. If you wish to use the above devices you’ll need to find out to what iPhone model is equivalent and configure data accordingly, but they remain untested and unsupported devices.
The iPhone can be head mounted or tripod mounted. The depth sensor and the camera field of view are sufficient to accommodate for some head movement.
Ensure that the Live Link Face iOS application is installed.
Stereo Camera Pairs
Any vertically-aligned stereo camera pair that can be calibrated with our tools. In theory, any stereo configuration might work, however, a vertical pair is the only configuration that’s been well tested and is known to produce good results.
Lighting can be either on-device, studio lighting, or both of these combined.
Both visible and infrared light are supported. Visible light tends to perform better as it’s scattered less by skin, producing sharper results, but ultimately the most important attribute for footage is sharpness. If your particular shooting circumstances happen to yield sharper footage with infrared light, this is well supported.
Stereo hardware must be head mounted. While it’s technically possible to mount this hardware on a tripod, these devices are commonly optimized to the highest possible extent for parameters other than depth of field, which make static mount shoots very impractical.
This kind of capture device is varied, not readily available, and sometimes bespoke. Therefore we can’t recommend specific models, nor prescribe or limit what can be used.
