Creating a Scriptable Tool in Unreal Engine. | Unreal Engine 5.7 Documentation

This guide shows you how to use the Scriptable Tool system to create an interactive tool that spawns new dynamic mesh spheres when you click geometry in the level. The tool includes a radius property in its user interface (UI).

You can use any level or project, but this tutorial's resulting Scriptable Tool requires geometry to click on. We recommend using the Third Person Template.

Prerequisite Knowledge

To best understand and use the content on this page, we recommend to:

Have a fundamental understanding of Blueprints.
Be familiar with the introductory topic of Scriptable Tools.

Enable Plugins

To use the Scriptable Tools editor mode and access the nodes you must have the associated plugin enabled. Several functions in this guide use Geometry Script, which also requires a plugin.

To enable the plugins or verify that it is already enabled, follow these steps:

In the menu bar, select Edit > Plugins.
In the search bar, type "scriptable tools".
Enable Scriptable Tools Editor Mode plugin, and select Yes in the dialog popup to restart the editor.
1. You do not need to enable the Scriptable Tools Framework module. The editor mode automatically includes it.
Repeat the steps for the Geometry Script plugin. In the search bar, type "geometry script".
In the editor, click the Selection Mode dropdown and choose Scriptable Tools.

You should see a UI similar to the image below, with an empty tool palette on the left. The viewport could be different depending on which project template you start with.

Create a Tool Blueprint

You create Scriptable Tools from a Blueprint Class or Editor Utility Blueprint.

If you make an editor tool with a Blueprint Class instead of an Editor Utility Blueprint, you cannot access editor subsystems and other editor-only functionality. This is true even inside an UEditorScriptableTool.

To create a Blueprint, follow these steps:

Create a folder in the main Content folder and name it Blueprints to aid in project organization.
Right-click in the Blueprints folder and select Editor Utilities > Editor Utility Blueprint from the context menu.
Open the ALL CLASSES submenu, type "scriptable" into the search box, and select EditorScriptableModularBehaviorTool.

The EditorScriptableClickDragTool is deprecated and replaced by the EditorScriptableModularBehaviorTool.
Name the new BP asset BP_tool_MakeSphere, then right-click and select Edit or double-click the asset, to open the Blueprint.
In the Details panel on the right of the BP Editor, give the tool a name, "Sphere" is used for this example. Also add an appropriate name in the Category field. "Shape Tools" is used in this example.
1. To come back to edit the name, category, or other aspects later, click Class Defaults at the top of the BP Editor.
Compile (ctrl + Alt) and save (ctrl + S) the Blueprint. Switch back to the Scriptable Tools editor mode.

The Sphere tool should now appear in the tool palette in a section with the corresponding category name.

You can run the Sphere tool now, but it won't do anything. Use the Complete button at the bottom-center of the viewport to exit the tool.

If Hit Function Setup and Testing

The goal of the tool is to place a sphere when you click geometry in the level. For this, a function to determine if a mouse click selected ("hit") a mesh is needed.

As you search and find nodes, you can view what category they are in.

To create the function, follow these steps:

Go back to the BP Editor. In the left panel, click on the Override dropdown for FUNCTIONS and select OnScriptSetup. This Override menu contains various functions that provide control of almost all aspects of the Scriptable Tool.
Right-click the Event Graph background, scroll down to Scriptable Tool > Input and select Add Single Click Behavior.
1. All the Scriptable Tool nodes live under the Scriptable Tool sub-menu. This is a great way to discover other nodes as you explore. Once you know what you're looking for, it's faster to type into the search field at the top.
There are many behaviors, some more complex than others. The power of the EditorScriptableModularBehaviorTool is that you can have many behaviors in a single tool. When you finish this tutorial, feel free to add other behaviors to enhance the tool further, as they all work on the same paradigm of having callback events.
Connect the execution pin from Event OnScriptSetup to the input execution pin on Add Single Click Behaviour.
In the Add Single Click Behaviour node, drag out the If Hit By Click pin and choose Event Dispatchers > Create Event. You will use this to test if anything was hit when you click in the viewport.
On the Create Event node, click Select Function and select Create a matching function. You should see a new function appear in the FUNCTIONS area of My Blueprint, named BP_tool_MakeSphere_AutoGenFunc.
Right-click on the new function and rename it to "IfHitByClick" to indicate what the function does.
Right-click in the graph, then search and select Print String.
Drag out the IfHitByClick execution pin to the execution pin of Print String to create a wire connection. Wire the Print String and Return Node execution pins.
In the string field type, "Running IfHitByClick function". This text will appear in the viewport when you run the tool.
Compile (Ctrl + Alt) and save (Ctrl + S).
Select the Sphere tool from the tool palette and click in the viewport to test if the new function is working. You should see the "Running IfHitByClick function" text when you click in the viewport.
1. The text appears as soon as you click. Try clicking and holding the mouse button down, you should see the text immediately on click, and not when you release.

You have confirmed that the tool is recognized and will run, with a print statement showing the button click and release.

Expand the Function

Now that you confirmed the tool is properly handling the click, you can replace the print function.

To update the function, follow these steps:

Remove the Print String node from the IfHitByClick function.
Right-click in the graph, then search and select Get Ray Start End which is in the Geometry Script > Shapes >Ray category.
1. This node takes the input information from this function, which provides a ray, and gives a start and end point in world space that you can use to see if the click hit something. A ray is the screen location and direction of the click.
  
  If you try to wire the Click Pos output to the Ray input, an error message appears. The message indicates, there is a mismatch between the pin types, even though they have the same color. Hover your mouse over the pins, Click Pos and Ray. Note that the pin types are different. One is an input device ray structure and the other is just a ray structure.
Right-click the Click Pos pin, and choose Split Struct Pin. A structure or struct is a collection of data.
1. When you split the pin you can see the information passed to the function. It's all very useful, but you are only going to use the world ray. Hover your mouse over that pin to notice it's a ray structure, exactly like the input on the Get Ray Start End node.
Connect the Click Pos World Ray out pin to the Get Ray Start End's Ray input. Leave the start and end distances at 0.0 which effectively sets an automatic distance in the world.
Right-click in the graph, then search and select Line Trace by Channel. Connect the Start Point and End Point pins from Get Ray Start End to the respective pins in Line Trace by Channel.
Enable Trace Complex in Line Trace by Channel to test against complex collisions.
Connect the execution pin from the IfHitByClick node to the Line Trace By Channel node.
The Out Hit pin in Line Trace By Channel node is a struct that contains properties of the trace hit. Right-click the pin and choose Split Struct Pin to observe the properties.
1. The Return Value is a boolean, which is true if Line Trace By Channel hit any actor in the world, and false if it did not.
On the Return Node, right-click the Return Value and choose Split Struct Pin. The top entry is Return Value Hit, which is a boolean.
1. This boolean is the most essential part of the IfHitByClick function. If the function is true on return, a hit is detected when the user releases the mouse. If it is false, it means a hit was not detected. This distinction is important because if it is false, you can bypass the remaining script to do nothing more.
Connect the Return Value pin from Line Trace By Channel to the Return Value Hit input and connect the execution pins.
Compile (Ctrl + Alt) and save (Ctrl + S) the Blueprint.

Print Function Test

Before proceeding to add the sphere, you can test this function with a print text.

This time, use a Print Text and Format Text node to test the function. Format Text provides the option to combine text you type with the value of variables. It's a powerful way to see what's happening intuitively.

To create the function, follow these steps:

Right-click the graph, then search and select the Format Text and Print Text nodes.
In the Format Text node, type Trace Return Value is: {b} (do not use quotes) and press enter. A new input should appear on the Format Text node labeled b. The node recognizes anything between curly braces and makes a new pin that you can wire other pins into. The gray pin indicates that it does not have a type until you wire something in.
Wire the Return Value out pin to the b input of Format Text.
Wire the Result pin from Format Text into the In Text input of the Print Text node. Connect the Print Text node's execution pins between Line Trace by Channel and Return Node.
Compile and test the tool again in the Scriptable Tools mode. Click on actors and the empty background.

When you click on actors, you should see true in the print text and false when you click on the scene background. Try clicking and holding on an actor, then releasing over the actor and the background. The true and false are determined when you release the mouse button.

You will see true and false twice. When you initially click, the Line Trace by Channel node fires, and the Print Text node shows you the value. However, the Return Node does not return that value. When you release, the Line Trace by Channel fires again at the new mouse position. This is the one that determines the return value.

Location Variable

To avoid running the Line Trace by Channel node more times than needed, you can store the hit position in a variable.

To create the variable, follow these steps:

Open the IfHitByClick function.
On the Line Trace by Channel node, right-click Out Hit Location and choose Promote to Variable.
1. The Promote to Local Variable option means the variable is only available in this function. You use Promote to Variable to make the variable available to the entire MakeSphere tool. The new variable appears in the My Blueprint tab and is named the same as the pin it was wired into.
Wire the Set nod's execution pins between the Line Trace by Channel and Print Text nodes so the variable can be set.

On Hit Function Setup

The IfHitByClick function, which signals if an object was hit, is complete. Next you'll implement the On Hit By Click event to determine when and where an actor spawns.

To create the new function, follow these steps:

In the Event Graph, click and drag out the On Hit By Click pin, and then select the Create Event node.
1. This is the same process as making the Create Event for If Hit By Click.
Click Select Function and choose Create a Matching Function which adds a new function to the FUNCTIONS section of your My Blueprint tab, and immediately jumps you there to edit it.
Rename the new function to OnHitByClick.
In the OnHitByClick function, right-click the graph, then search and select the Spawn Actor from Class node with Editor Level Library as the target (ensure Context Sensitive is enabled). Wire its execution pin to the input of the function.
Click the Actor Class dropdown, then search and click Dynamic Mesh Actor.
Compile (Ctrl + Alt) and save (Ctrl + S) the Blueprint.
The actor spawns at the location of a hit object. To determine the location, drag in the Out Hit Location variable and choose Get Out Hit Location.
Wire the variable to the Location pin on the Spawn Actor From Class node.
Compile (Ctrl + Alt) and save (Ctrl + S) the Blueprint.

If Context Sensitive is disabled when searching for Spawn Actor from Class, two functions with the same name may appear. Both nodes have different targets, Editor Level Library and Editor Actor Subsystem. The latter has an extra Target input which will error out when you compile since it expects an input.

Spawn Sphere at Hit Location

The tool now adds a dynamic mesh actor at the location of a positive click point. However, the dynamic mesh actor is empty. You must get the dynamic mesh itself to spawn the sphere, which is on the dynamic mesh component of the actor.

To add a sphere, follow these steps:

Right-click the node background, make sure Context Sensitive is turned off, then search and select for Get Dynamic Mesh.
Wire the Return Value pin from the Spawn Actor from Class node to the Target pin. A new node automatically appears. This node gets the dynamic mesh component from the actor, which enables the Get Dynamic Mesh to work.
Wire the execution pins.
Right-click the node background, then search and select the Append Sphere Box node. This node adds a sphere as the dynamic mesh for the actor.
Wire the execution pins and the Get Dynamic Mesh's Return Value to the Target Mesh pin.
Compile (Ctrl + Alt) and save (Ctrl + S) the Blueprint.
Test the tool in the viewport.

When you click anywhere that isn't an empty background, a sphere should appear. A new dynamic mesh actor also appears in the Outliner, and the print text information appears in the viewport.

There are many choices for creating a mesh, you can look through the Geometry Script > Primitives category to try other ones.

Add a Radius Property

You now have created the base for the Sphere tool. To expand functionality, you can add a radius setting for the spheres.

To adjust the radius setting, follow these steps:

Open the Content Drawer, then right-click in the Blueprints folder you created and select Blueprint Class.
Type "propertyset" into the search box, then select EditorScriptableInteractiveToolPropertySett. Name the new BP asset "BP_MakeSphere_Settings", then double-click it to open it.
In the Variables section on the left, click the + icon to add a new variable. Name it Radius, change the type to Float, and make it Public by clicking the eye icon open. If you keep the variable private, it will not appear in the settings panel for the tool.
Compile (Ctrl + Alt) and save (Ctrl + S) the Blueprint.
In the Details panel, set the Slider Range field to 10 and 200, and then set the Default Value to 50. Compile a second time.
Open the BP_tool_MakeSphere Blueprint and navigate to the Event Graph.
Right-click the graph background, then search and select Add Property Set of Type. Wire this node's execution pins between the Event OnScriptSetup and the Add Single Click Behavior nodes.
In the Property Set Type pin dropdown, select the BP_MakeSphere_Settings class you created with the Radius variable in it.
Drag out the New Property Set pin, then search and select Cast to BP_MakeSphere_Settings
Wire the BP_MakesSphere_Settings node's execution pins between the Add Property Set of Type and Add Single Click Behavior.
Right-click the As BP Make Sphere Settings pin and select Promote to Variable. Rename this variable to "Settings" and onnect the execution pins.
Compile (Ctrl + Alt).

The Add Property Set of Type node creates an instance of the Blueprint that has the Radius variable, so that you can use it in this Scriptable Tool Blueprint. It is cast to the specific type so that it can be accessed directly from the variable that is created, otherwise you could not get the Radius value when you want it.
Return to the graph for the OnHitByClick function, drag in the Settings variable, and choose Get Settings (ctrl + drag).
Drag out the Settings pin, then search and select Get Radius. Wire the output into the Radius input on the Append Sphere Box node.
Compile (Ctrl + Alt) and save (Ctrl + S) the Blueprint.

If you add other variables to the Property Set, you access them the same way as the Settings variable using the variable's name.

Return to the viewport and rerun the Sphere tool. In the Details panel, you should see a slider for the Radius field. When you adjust the value, the spheres you place will change size.
