What’s New
Lumen Dynamic Global Illumination and Reflections
The Lumen system lights scenes with Global Illumination (GI) in real time, with close to path-traced quality. Lumen enables indirect lighting to adapt on the fly to changes to direct lighting or geometry—for example, changing the sun’s angle with the time of day or opening an exterior door.
In the Ambience panel under Render, you can now find two options: Standard and Lumen.
The Standard option, which is the real-time rendering method used in previous Twinmotion versions, uses Light Propagation Volumes (LPV) and is a voxelization process that calculates a luminous approximation for each cell in the scene.
The Lumen option is based on ray tracing and calculates one light bounce and one reflection bounce on surfaces, giving much better rendering quality results.
To sum up, the Standard option has a volumetric approach, while Lumen has a surface approach.
Activation
Lumen is activated in the Ambience panel in the Render section under Real time.
In the Preferences panel under Quality, the quality setting must be set to High or Ultra.
In the Preferences panel under Settings, select the DirectX 12 checkbox under Graphic hardware support.
The Lumen system consumes a large amount of VRAM.
Limitations
Cycloramas and LED walls: As Lumen currently supports only Static Meshes, Cycloramas and LED walls are not supported.
Cycloramas and LED walls are Dynamic Meshes. They visually represent Static Meshes, but their functionality is different. Support for Dynamic Meshes is currently in development and should be available soon.
Scattered and painted vegetation: Scattered and painted vegetation does not contribute light bounces to Lumen global illumination.
Lumen is not supported in Virtual Reality (VR) mode. While Lumen can run in VR mode, it is not suitable because of the high frame rates and resolutions required in virtual reality environments.
For more information about Lumen and the system requirements to use Lumen, refer to Lumen Global Illumination.
EV100 Real-World Lighting Support
We now support real-world light values for Sun intensity (65,000-100,000 Lux). To do so, we made changes to our light intensity maximum value range and updated the Auto-exposure algorithm. This means that auto-exposure will work for a larger range of values (26 stops of range, compared to 4 stops previously). If your scene is only lit by the Twinmotion Dynamic Sky (as opposed to an HDRI), the auto-exposure will be the same whether the Sun intensity value is at 25 or 100,000. That said, the increased auto-exposure range may impact legacy scenes, requiring a manual adjustment to the Exposure.
Now that we support real-world light values for Sun intensity, the lumen values for lights and the nits values for emissive materials are in conformity with the 65,000-100,000 Sun intensity.
When activating an HDRI, the viewport will be mostly burnt out. Reduce the Sun intensity to 25 to resolve the issue.
Local Exposure
We’ve added new Local Exposure settings in the Ambience panel under Env > Exposure. Local exposure automatically applies local adjustments to exposure and includes options to preserve highlight and shadow details on top of the existing Exposure settings. This is especially useful for projects with challenging high dynamic range scenes, where the global Exposure setting is not enough to avoid blown-out highlights and shadows that are completely dark.
Glass Optimization
We recently introduced a new optimized basic glass to improve the rendering times in scenes that use multiple glass layers. This new glass has been stripped of all specific features that weighed it down and should mainly be used for simple architectural clear glass purposes.
This option is an alternative to the Standard and Colored glass, and appears as the Basic option in the parameters for materials in the Properties panel.
This new Basic parameter is supported with Material substitution as BaseMaterialType 2. Refer to this article for further information on substitution.
Sketchfab Assets Keep Hierarchy Mode
In previous versions, Sketchfab assets were exclusively imported in a collapsed mode. In this new release, if a Sketchfab asset was created in multiple parts, by default it is imported in a keep hierarchy mode as multiple meshes.
When you drag a Sketchfab asset into the Viewport, a container is automatically created in the Scene graph and contains the separated meshes.
The entire model can be scaled proportionally by selecting the root folder (container) in the Scene graph.
The sub-parts in the container can be scaled non-proportionally.
You can change this default import mode by selecting Merge all objects under Sketchfab library import in the Preferences panel.
Previously imported Sketchfab assets will retain the original collapsed import mode. To switch them to a non-collapsed mode, delete them from the Library (right-click the asset in the Library and select Delete) and reimport them.
Import Animated FBX, GLTF, and GLB Files (Early Access)
Files containing animated objects can now be imported into Twinmotion.
The only supported file formats are:
FBX
GLTF/GLB
To import animation files, open the Import panel and select the Animation tab. Guidelines
The supported animation types are the following:
Skeletal meshes, animated using bones and skin modifier.
Animated static meshes using TSR (translation, scale, and rotation).
Static meshes that are not animated can also be imported, although this is not a recommended approach.
Animation in version 2023.2 does not support the following:
Animations without meshes associated with them, such as certain motion capture files.
Animated cameras or animated lights are not supported and will not be imported.
Any kind of point-level animation, including but not limited to morph targets and blend shapes.
All settings are managed at the animation root level in the Scene graph and are visible in the Properties panel.
Animations provide the following Play modes: Off, Once, and Loop.
Loop is activated by default on import.
Off stops the animation and resets it at the beginning (including trim-in, but not delay).
Once plays the animation (including trim-in, and delay).
In the Properties panel under Details, you can also:
Change the speed of an animation.
Add a delay to an animation.
Define where in a sequence an animation starts and stops.
Play modes and changes to the properties of an animation are applied to all the children within the root Container of the animation in the Scene graph.
Animation files can contain multiple animated objects, and several types of animated objects (skeletal mesh and static mesh animations).
Skeletal meshes that contain multiple animations can be imported. The animations can be viewed and selected in the Properties panel.
If an animated file contains skeletal meshes with several animations, the animations are accessible in the Properties panel.
Media Support and Logic for Animation
Animation parameters are set globally: changing the parameters of an animation while in Media mode has the same effect as changing the parameters of this animation when out of Media mode.
Videos: Animation sequences can be previewed with the video controls or the scrubber.
Images and panoramas: You can select which part of an animation you want to show in an image or panorama in the individual export settings for images and panoramas. In the Media dock, select the image or panorama, and in the Image or Pano tabs, use the Snapshot time slider.
Playback/relation with Twinmotion Animators:
When previewing videos that contain Animators such as Translators and Rotators (Library > Tools > Animators) in the Viewport or in videos, the animators play continuously; the video controls and scrubber do not have an effect on them, as they do on animated files.
However, when you export a video that contains Animators, they are reinitialized to the start of the animation, as are animated files.
Limitations
Scene graph:
The hierarchy of imported animated objects cannot be modified in the Scene graph. However, you can parent an animated object to any Twinmotion object.
Animated objects or their subparts cannot be saved in the User library.
Custom paths: Animated objects cannot be added to a Custom path.
Paint and Scatter tools: The Paint and Scatter tools cannot be used on animated objects.
Copy-paste / instancing: Imported animations, and any of their sub-components, cannot be copied, pasted, or instantiated.
File management:
Animated objects are imported as referenced files:
They are reimported each time you open a Twinmotion file.
They cannot be gathered by the Resource collector.
They are not handled by the missing file manager.
If the name and / or location of an imported local animated file changes, a broken link icon appears on the file in the Import dock. To restore the link, click the ellipsis (...) above the file in the dock, and in the menu, select File settings to open the Animation File Import window and locate the file.
Deleting an animated file from the Import dock also deletes the associated animated objects in the scene.
Deleting an animated object in the Scene graph also deletes the associated animated object in the scene. (You can reset the source file path in the menu of the imported animated file in the Import dock.)
Sketchfab library: Animated objects dragged from the Sketchfab library are not animated in the scene. Only animated FBX, GLTF, or GLB imported files are supported. Workaround: To use animated FBX, GLTF, or GLB Sketchfab assets, download them from the Sketchfab website and import them into Twinmotion.
Twinmotion Cloud / Presentations: Animations cannot be exported to Cloud or Local Presentations.
Compatibility with the Render engine:
Skeletal meshes, such as Twinmotion characters, may appear black in Lumen reflections if they are not visible by the camera.
Skeletal meshes do not create Lumen mesh cards, and therefore are not taken into account by the Lumen GI solution.
Static meshes, whether they are animated or not, can have issues with the Lumen GI solution if they are scaled on import.
For more information about animated files in Twinmotion, refer to Animation.
Adobe Substance 3D Asset Files (SBSAR) Support
Twinmotion now supports the direct import of Adobe Substance 3D material files from the Materials dock, offering exceptional flexibility with real-time procedural parameter editing.
We have also included 30 preloaded Adobe Substance 3D materials in the Twinmotion Library, making it easier to access and use these materials for your projects.
Limitations:
Not all user interface parameter components from SBSAR files are currently supported in Twinmotion.
When exporting to Unreal Engine using Datasmith, only bitmaps will be used, resulting in non-procedural materials.
Adobe Substance 3D material files are not supported by the Material Table Substitution workflow.
Although Adobe Substance materials can have texture maps up to 8192 x 8192, in Twinmotion the resolution is limited to 4096 x 4096.
Paint and Scatter Tools Enhancements
The Paint and Scatter tools have been enhanced. You can now use any simple static mesh from the Library to paint and scatter, including meshes from the Quixel Megascans, Sketchfab, and User library.
Limitations:
Skeletal meshes and assets with parameters from the Library are not supported. As a result, characters and vehicles, for example, will not be accepted.
The Paint and Scatter Tool can only paint and scatter simple meshes individually. When working with complex assets composed of multiple meshes, each mesh will be painted or scattered separately. To work around this limitation and treat multiple meshes as a single entity, consider grouping them together using your 3D modeling software. For Sketchfab assets from the library, you can activate the Sketchfab library import > Merge all objects checkbox in the Preferences panel before downloading the asset.
Media Preview
From the Media dock, you can now open an additional window from the Media menu of image, video, and panorama thumbnails to display your angle of view at any time. This enhances your scene-building efficiency by providing valuable information for precise object placement based on the camera position.
To address potential performance impacts associated with opening a second window, two quality modes (low and high) are selectable from within the window, allowing you to adjust it according to your specific needs.
Limitation:
When switching the Viewport to Presenter mode, the Media Preview window will no longer be displayed.
Path Traced Transparency for Water Materials
The Path tracer now correctly renders transparency for water materials. We are now making use of Unreal Engine’s “Single Layer Water” shading model.
Limitations:
This improvement impacts only the water materials in the Library (Library > Materials > Water). It does not impact the water volume tools (Library > Objects > Water) or the Ocean feature in Ambience.
There are some final look and feel visual discrepancies between the Real time and Path tracer rendering modes:
Water caustics effects are not available in the Path tracer rendering mode. Refraction behaves differently in the Real-time rendering mode compared to the Path tracer. The Path tracer mode is physically correct, while the Real-time mode is not.
Turbidity is not supported in the Path tracer rendering mode.
The winter season effect result is different (more transparent) in the Path tracer rendering mode.
Visual improvements of Snow And Rain Weather Effects
Rain and snow weather effects have been refactored to improve their visual fidelity, including the way accumulated rain appears on various surfaces, and how water droplets splash in puddles.
The particles now react well with the wind speed and wind directions.
The surface effects have been reworked to simulate droplet effects.
Previously, if the camera moved fast, the particles were regenerated with a delay. The particles are now generated constantly with no delay.
You can also increase or decrease the brightness of the particles, and separately enable or disable surface effects and precipitation.
Known limitation: The particle systems and the overcast Twinmotion Dynamic Sky are still not visible in the Path tracer rendering mode.
