Expression Editor offers the ability to modify MetaHuman head DNA files at the expression level, supporting a linear workflow covering everything from inspection to final export. Only fully rigged MetaHuman characters assembled using MetaHuman Creator in Unreal Engine 5.6+ with the DCC Export pipeline can be modified using Expression Editor.
Warning: Expression Editor is not compatible with a joints-only rig exported from MetaHuman Creator, body DNA files, or characters created in the MetaHuman Creator web application.
The following is possible using Expression Editor:
Minor technical fixes like interpenetration or unpleasant shapes in specific expressions can be fixed in context.
Creative modification of Expressions (such as deeper dimple or a larger smile) is now possible.
Larger and more directed modifications to increase the likeness of a MetaHuman to a specific reference (of scanned performers) in their expressive range becomes possible*.
Simple pseudo-human features (for example, elf ears) can now reach further into the softer and more animated areas of the face, as their peripheral effects can be trivially corrected through Skin Weight editing and/or minor Expression editing.
Exaggerated pseudo-human features (for example, tusk-mouthed orcs), previously out of reach, become possible for anybody willing to edit the right set of expressions.
Warning: Highly divergent morphologies (including a different number of eyes or mouths) are not supported by Expression Editor as the set of expressions is fixed and built around general human morphology; two eyes and a single mouth below the eyes being the most significant constraint.
