Devices are an important part of your Creative toolset for setting up specific interactive experiences for your players.
By customizing devices and combining them with other devices, you can build complex components for specific game mechanics.
For information on Fortnite Patchwork devices, see Patchwork Devices.
Finding a Device
Finding a Device in Creative
- From Create mode, activate the phone tool by pressing the P key.
-
Next, press the M key, then click Content in the top navigation bar to open the Creative inventory.
-
From this screen, select the Devices category. From here, you can browse the entire inventory of devices, or narrow your search.
Here are some ways to narrow your search:
- Use the search bar to search for a specific device by name.
- Explore devices by using tags. In the right panel, check the box for any specific keywords you want to use. If you select multiple tags, devices that have any of the selected tags are shown. If you want to get more specific, click Intersect above the tag list. This will show only devices that have all the tags you selected.
- Click the Sort button, above the displayed device tiles, to sort the results alphabetically. Clicking this button cycles through the different sorting patterns: Default, A-Z, and Z-A.
Finding a Device in UEFN
If you are using UEFN to build your islands, the following steps will help you find devices in your Content Browser or in Content Drawer.
- Click Content Drawer at the bottom left of the editor, or open a Content Browser window and dock it in the editor.
- Look in the side navigation panel and you'll see a folder tree. Click Fortnite > Devices to open the Devices folder.
- In the Devices folder, you'll see many subfolders. Devices are sorted here in ways that don't match up exactly to the tags in the Creative Inventory, so the easiest way to find the device you are looking for is to use the Search bar. Make sure the Devices folder is selected, and type part or all of the device name into the Search field.
- Once you've located the device you want, drag it from the Content Browser into your viewport.
Equipping a Device to the Quick Bar
When you find a device you want to use on your island, there are several ways you can equip it:

- Click and drag a device to any slot on your Quick Bar.
- Click to select a device, then click any slot number, or double-click the device to add it to the next available slot.
You can use the Place Now button to directly place a selected device on your island, instead of adding a device to your Quick Bar.
You can equip as many devices to the Quick Bar as there are slots. Use either of the first two methods to equip devices to the Quick Bar, then place them at your leisure when you return to your island.
To return to your island, do one of the following:
- Press the M key.
- Click the Exit button.
- Press the Esc key.
Placing a Device
If you equipped a device to your Quick Bar, follow these steps to place your device.

- With your phone tool activated, select the number above the Quick Bar for the device you want to place.
- Use your phone to position the device, then click the left mouse button to place it.
- Click the right mouse button to let go of the device.
Refer to the Create-mode hotkeys illustration below to see how to use hotkeys.

Note that the hotkeys are contextual, meaning that they change based on what you're doing.
Tips for Customizing Devices
Every device has its own specific settings that you can modify, but there are a few useful features common to all (or at least most!) devices.
-
Approach the device until the Customize prompt shows, then press E to open the Customize panel.
-
Click the settings (gear) icon at the bottom of the panel.
-
In the settings, you can:
- Rename: Give the device a custom name. This is especially useful if you are using multiple versions of a device. Giving each one a name that indicates what you're using it for can be very helpful later. For example, if you have multiple Wildlife Spawners, naming each one based on the type of wildlife it spawns can save you time when searching for a specific type of wildlife. Renaming devices is especially useful when using the Event Browser.
- Reset All: Most devices have multiple settings that can be customized. This clicking this will reset any changes you've made back to their default settings, including the device name if you've renamed it.
- Reset Properties: This option resets any option values you've changed to the defaults, but does not change the device name.
- Reset Functions: This only resets any functions you've defined for a device.
- Reset Events: This only resets any events you've defined for a device.
The reset options are great for when you just want to start over on a device, or if you want to make two of the same device with very different settings.
